Well hi there! I’m coming to you from a brand new website and man does that feel good to say. For the last 4 months, I’ve been working along with a talented designer (Kendra at Kay Creative– she’s the best!), to completely revamp my site. I am so proud of this site. Today, we’re focusing in on protein. More specifically, how to make a protein smoothie when you don’t want to (or have) protein powder to use. Vegan protein powder is a discussion for another day- there’s A LOT I can say on the topic, which is why I’m hosting a Masterclass all about plant protein on Patreon on July 28th. It’s an hour devoted solely to protein- how much of it we should be eating, sources of it, and whether I think protein powder can be a good thing or bad thing.

But today’s recipe is focusing in on how to make a Vegan Chocolate Protein Shake without adding any protein powder. Because plants have protein!
We’re calling on some of the following ingredients for their awesome protein benefits.
Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds are an amazing little seed because they’re actually a complete protein! (You can learn more about hemp seeds and how I like to use them here.)
Chia Seeds: Another high-quality protein, chia seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids and are also considered a complete protein. (If you’re wondering what the f a complete protein is- it’s whether all of these amino acids are present.)
Almond Butter: Another great source of protein, almond butter also contains healthy fats that are good for our heart health.
So, without further ado, let’s get to the Vegan Chocolate Protein Shake recipe!
Vegan Chocolate Protein Shake (without powder)
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/2 cup ice
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 cup plant milk
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
- dash of Himalayan salt
- a few drops stevia to sweeten (optional)
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender. Blend until fully mixed. Serve immediately.
