Who doesn’t love a good tortilla chip with guac every now and then?!
I know I do. (Even more so when you add some plant-based cheese sauce and lentil taco meat.) But I’ve found that I don’t love the way fried tortilla chips make me feel- kind of weighed down from all the grease.
I’ve been on the hunt for healthy baked tortilla chips at the supermarket for YEARS now. (Lol it really has been a hunt.) Trader Joe’s did have one kind of baked corn tortilla chip which I really love, but I’m pretty sure they discontinued it. Since then- I haven’t found any good contenders.
So- after too many grocery store trips of coming up empty in the chip department- I decided to start making my own.
I’m happy to report that it’s really freaking easy to make your own!!
So what’s the process like?
You start with your favorite kind of tortilla, cut them, salt them, and bake them- that’s it!
And what kind of tortillas should I use?
This is totally up to you! Use what you love. I recommend though if you go for corn- check out the source of where the tortillas are coming from and look for non-GMO if possible.
A lot of corn products are made from genetically modified crops, which have been linked to a host of issues. I try to stay away from GMOs as much as possible. If you’d like to get a basic overview of what GMOs are- you can start here.
Over the past few years, I’ve really fallen for Siete’s Almond Flour tortillas (which I usually find in the frozen section of the grocery store). Actually, any Siete tortillas I really do like. They have cassava & coconut, cassava & chia, and even a chickpea flour option. And they’re all non-GMO, gluten-free and also grain-free.
And while Siete does make ready-to-eat chips, I like to bake them myself to skip the frying process. Less frying = less grease = me feeling lighter and happier.
The best part about this whole thing is that it’s actually quick and easy to do. 10 minutes all-in and you’re done! The trickiest part about it is that the Siete wraps can be a little expensive, so I always keep an eye out for when Siete is on sale at the store.
Alright- enough talking, let’s get to the baked tortilla chips!
