In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I’m sharing my absolute favorite summer drink, this refined sugar-free watermelon margarita. This drink is not a traditional margarita by any stretch, but it tastes delicious and I promise you’ll love it even more than any standard margarita. Margaritas typically contain a sour mix, a combination of simple syrup (sugar and water) and lime juice. But personally, I would prefer to have the drink sweetened by natural sugar from fruit versus refined sugar.
And because fruit is so freaking delicious, you can skip the sour mix altogether and use only frozen watermelon, lime juice, tequila, and stevia in this drink. Watermelon mixes perfectly with the lime and tequila flavors and once blended, creates a smooth creamy frozen marg. If you don’t like watermelon, you can also try making a frozen pineapple, mango, or strawberry margarita.
To prepare the watermelon for drinks, start with a whole melon. Peel it, cut it up, wrap it, and freeze (I put 1-2 cups of watermelon per each sandwich bag and freeze). It’s much easier to make individual drinks when the fruit is frozen in separate bags.
If you’re making the drink without alcohol, try swapping in 2oz of unsweetened almond milk for the tequila. It’s creamy salty-sweet perfection.
Enjoy the margs and have a safe and fun Cinco de Mayo!
- 2 cups frozen watermelon (freeze prior to making)
- 2 oz (2 shots) good-quality silver tequila (I like Espolon)
- juice of 1 lime
- dash of salt
- a few drops of liquid stevia to sweeten (completely optional)
- Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender.
- Serve in a glass with a salted rim, drink immediately.
yum!!

Looks yummy. I’ll have 2.
Done. 🙂
This looks amazing – sad I didn’t see it in time for Cinco de Mayo! It looks like a go-to summer drink, though…

This drink is perfect for every summer weekend- the best at the pool 🙂
Love this simple recipe! I’m not usually a huge margarita fan, mostly because they’re too sweet, but this looks right up my alley.
Thanks Liz!
