Happy Friday! Let’s talk about how good this superfood smoothie tastes for an early Friday morning breakfast. Refreshing, energizing, and filling, this baby leaves you feeling ready to take on whatever lies ahead of you for the weekend. Hopefully that includes some fun things?!
Superfoods (including blueberries, kale, and acai berries) win their super title because they typically pack a hefty nutrient punch, containing high levels of necessary vitamins and minerals. They can also contain a large dose of antioxidants, as is the case with goji berries. Antioxidants help to protect the body from oxidative cell damage.
Goji berries, pack a punch of vitamin C and have been used to treat visual ailments, poor circulation, and help boost the immune system. I picked up a pack of dried goji berries (I love topping my smoothies with them), but you can also purchase goji berry powder.
Chia seeds, which are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and calcium, are another superfood packed into this powerful smoothie. They contain protein, which is why I’ve been starting most of my mornings for the past week with a bowl of chia seed pudding. (Let me know if you’re interested in the recipe!)
Lastly, maca powder, derived from the maca root, is thought to boost energy, endurance, and libido. Kind of like what those artificially-sweetened energy drinks claim to do without any of the added chemicals. As someone who uses this powder regularly, I am in total agreement with the maca claims and definitely think it’s worth the investment.
What superfoods have you tried recently? Anyone else devoted to maca?
