Did you used to mess with a chocolate milkshake as a kid? I definitely, DEFINITELY did.
My dad was kind of an expert chocolate milkshake maker. He had this whole process involving chocolate ice cream, Hershey’s syrup, Nesquik, an ice cold stainless steel cup, and a special spoon (which he named “MY SPOON). His milkshakes were always the perfect blend of rich creamy ice cream and chocolate cold liquid.
I miss those milkshakes. (I don’t miss all the crazy ingredients in them, but I still miss them.) The good news is that I’ve found the perfect plant-based substitute. And, to make it even more tasty, I added peanut butter.
With the peanut butter and the added nutritional benefits from cacao- I’m officially declaring this smoothie to be even better than my dad’s milkshakes. (He would def disagree with me, but that’s ok.)
Seriously- this smoothie is magic. You get lots of plant nutrients like antioxidants, magnesium, and fiber without any of the inflammatory-causing dairy or sugar. It’s a win-win!

Cacao Peanut Butter Smoothie
- 1 cup plant-based milk (unsweetened almond or oat work well)
- 1 frozen banana
- handful of ice
- dash of Himalayan salt
- 1 tbsp cacao powder
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- Combine everything in a high speed blender and mix.
- For a thicker smoothie/milkshake vibe- decrease the amount of liquid to a 1/2 cup. For a thinner, more drinkable smoothie- use 1 cup of liquid.
